He is probably the most hated actor in the Philippines for effectively playing the mentally insane character of Joaquin in the top-rating TV series FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano. The hate felt by Filipinos is fueled even more by what Joaquin has done to Cardo’s life because over the course of the years, Joaquin has done nothing but to make sure Cardo suffer and feel pain.

But in real life Arjo Atayde is one of the nicest persons in the world, according to the people he worked with. And the rivalry between Coco and Arjo is only on the show because they are actually good friends. In fact, Arjo considers Coco to be his very own mentor.

“I consider him one of my mentors. I learn so much from him. This rivalry is just the perception of other people. I look up to him. He has been in the business longer than me, and he is way more popular,” he said in an interview with Inquirer last April 2016.

This is not the first time Arjo expressed his admiration to Coco. When he received the Teleserye Supporting Actor of the Year trophy at The PEP List Year 3 Award last August 2016, Arjo turned a bit emotional as he dedicated his win to Coco.

“Before I end this speech of mine, there’s just one last person I want to thank. Three years ago, it was the Star Magic Ball, he was being escorted by marshals and the marshals didn’t know who I was because I was really new. So I stepped aside, and this guy goes, ‘Wait a minute.’ He called me out and he goes, ‘You know what? Nagagalingan ako sa ‘yo. One day, magkakatrabaho tayo.”

And eventually it did happen. Coco corroborated Arjo’s story, saying that he was very happy that he was able to work with Arjo.

“Nilapitan ko siya, hindi kami magkakilala. Tapos niyakap ko siya tapos sabi ko ‘Alam mo ang galing mo. Sana magkatrabaho tayo.’ And then nung nagkaroon kami ng opportunity nung binubuo nga tong casting, natuwa ako nung narinig ko na si Arjo yung makakasama ko,” Coco said on September 2015.

Coco then revealed that he and Arjo immediately got closed and would talk nonstop. Coco said that he shared a lot of the things he had learned in his career to Arjo.

“Nag-kwekwentuhan kami. Hindi pa rin natapos yung sharing naming kung ano yung pwede kong i-share sa kanya hindi lang pag-dating sa trabaho pati rin sa personal na buhay.”

And as Arjo Atayde left Ang Probinsyano, he will surely carry on all the things he’s learned from the show and from Coco Martin. Thank you Arjo!
