MANILA — It was actor Coco Martin who suggested to the management of ABS-CBN to do a TV adaptation of the classic Fernando Poe Jr. movie “Ang Probinsyano.”

In the recent press conference for the much-awaited primetime series, Martin said it all started with a meeting with ABS-CBN president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio.

He then suggested the 1997 movie “Ang Probinsyano,” about a police officer who is killed in a drug bust operation, and his twin brother who assumes his identity.

They then asked permission from Poe’s widow, veteran actress Susan Roces, to embark on the project.

Roces not only gave her blessings but she also agreed to play Lola Flora, the grandmother of the twins Ador and Cardo, in the TV remake.

Martin and Roces will be joined by a powerhouse cast that includes Ana Roces, Agot Isidro, Joey Marquez, Malou de Guzman, Dennis Padilla, Jaime Fabrigas, Arjo Atayde, Bela Padilla and Maja Salvador.

Directed by Malu Sevilla and Avel Sumpongco, “Ang Probinsyano” will start airing on Monday, September 28 after “TV Patrol.”
