“The Super Parental Guardians,” which stars Vice Ganda, continues to rule the holiday season box office, with ticket sales from provincial and international theaters pushing its estimated total haul to P590.1 million, producer Star Cinema announced on Tuesday.

The comedy, which also stars Coco Martin, is preparing to cross the P600 million mark, a feat never before achieved by a Filipino film. It currently holds the title of the highest grossing local film of all time, trailed only by another Vice Ganda effort, the 2015 smash hit “Beauty and the Bestie.”

The film is currently on its fifth week in cinemas.

“The Super Parental Guardians” earlier made headlines after it was excluded from this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), forcing Star Cinema to release it last November 30, three weeks before the start of the film fest.

Not being included in the eight official entries meant that it was not allowed to be screened on Metro Manila theaters from December 25 to January 3.

Directed by Joyce Bernal, the movie also features performances from child actors Awra Briguela and Simon “Onyok” Pineda, who have enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame following their stints on the hit prime time show “Ang Probinsyano” with Martin.

It also scored the biggest opening day gross for a Filipino film with P75 million, and was the only film last year to cross the P500 million threshold.
